Membrane Switch – Design and Manufacture
Butler Technologies produces quality membrane switches and keypads for a variety of industries including home healthcare, gas-detection equipment and industrial controls. A membrane switch is an electrical switch for turning a circuit on and off. Membrane switches are lower cost, and take up less design space than mechanical switches or buttons because of their low profile. Membrane switches are easy to clean which makes them ideal for Medical or industrial controls.
How is a Membrane Switch Constructed?
A membrane switch typically has 4 or more layers. The layers are normally assembled using pressure-sensitive adhesives. The bottom layer is typically the support layer and is constructed with a PET or PC. This layer will typically have a rear adhesive applied to back in order to hold the switch to the instrument in which it is operating. The next layer is the circuit layer consisting of silver traces and metal dome switches. The conductive layer is made by screen printing Printed Electronic traces. This is held in place by a dome spacer which holds the top layer off the domes. The top layer is typically a Graphic Overlay which acts as the graphic interface between the user and the machine. When the user presses the metal dome switch it will close the circuit and activate an interface of the machine. There can be any number of switches in one keypad.
It’s often desirable to have a tactile feedback when operating the interface. Operational keys can be manufactured to produce the appropriate feel using properly designed metal-snap or poly-domes, or constructed as non-tactile. We provide a variety of embossing styles including rail, dome and pillow. Our switches may also integrate surface-mount LEDs, touch screens, shielding and various tail terminations.
